Community. Kinship. Reciprocity. Tradition. Connection.
Between the fortress that shelters us and the forest that calls us into the unknown lies the village: a place of gathering, exchange, and shared life. Here, we discover ourselves through our relationships with others. The village offers the warmth of belonging, the wisdom of collective experience, and the security of mutual care. Yet the desire to fit in can also ask us to hide the very qualities that make us unique. The village invites us to explore what it means to belong without abandoning ourselves.
We are shaped by the villages that raise us, the communities we choose, and the courage it takes to build new ones. May you find your people without losing yourself.
The Symbol
Throughout history, villages have served as centers of community, cooperation, and cultural continuity. Their shared spaces, gathering places, and neighboring homes reflect humanity's interdependence and our need for connection.
As an archetype, the village represents the social world in which we form our identities, exchange knowledge, care for one another, and negotiate the balance between individual sovereignty and collective responsibility.
The Story
In fairy tales, the village often represents the familiar world from which the protagonist departs to begin an adventure. It offers home, customs, and a sense of identity, but its boundaries can also become limitations that must be questioned.
Through a depth-psychological lens, the village reflects the collective values and expectations we internalize as we learn how to belong. These shared beliefs can nurture us, but they can also discourage difference and reinforce old patterns.
The hero's journey often requires leaving the village, discovering something beyond its borders, and returning with new wisdom.
How can we remain connected to our community while having the courage to become who we truly are?
The Soma
Explore your sense of belonging.
Imagine yourself sitting in the heart of a village, surrounded by the sounds of everyday life. Notice what happens in your body as you imagine being welcomed, seen, and included.
Now imagine expressing an unpopular truth or revealing a part of yourself you usually conceal. Does your body soften, tense, or pull away?
Reflect on the communities where you feel most alive and those where you feel you must perform to be accepted.
What would it feel like to belong without pretending?

An Inquiry
Where do I experience a genuine sense of belonging?
Which communities nourish my growth, and which ask me to shrink?
What gifts, knowledge, or resources can I contribute to the collective?
How do I balance my need for independence with my need for connection?
What kind of village am I helping to create?
True belonging does not require us to become the same. It asks us to make room for one another.
